Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn Of Events ( 2011 )

A dramatic turn of events for Dream Theater. Mike Portnoy left the band and Mike Magnini joined, so there was much expectation about this album.

The thing is that the band had to prove that they can make it without one of the founding members. You can understand that they are trying very hard and they were in the rush for releasing this album that the result is an excellent album if they were any other band, but a mediocre one for Dream Theater. Excellent sound from a shiny production, as always of course. However, you realize that they are trying to make everything extremely complicated and to play the unplayable. The songs are stuffed with riffs, solos and changes so much, that good melodies are lost and you are wondering which is the song you started to listen to. Sometimes you forget there’s a singer in the band. Sometimes you think that Labrie is bored. You can realize he could do a lot more but it wasn’t on the plan. Sometimes you think you are listening to “Liquid Tension Experiment”. Sure there are many great moments and there are definitely times you enjoy the music that only this band can create, especially the song “On The Backs Of Angels”, but they are lost in a hurricane of technique and extreme progressive metal. So I guess the fans would find it nice but the rest will be tired. I have no doubt that many people will disagree with this review but this is natural as the album is totally controversial. There is a song in there that describes the moment of the band perfectly: “Lost Not Forgotten”…
